Why are the 360 boxes "un-pingable"

Everything within my home network can be pinged with good response times. Both the main 360 and Mini360 DO NOT respond. This makes it difficult to test the connection from "the other end". However my network watcher app lists both boxes as connected, the boxes own diagnostics show strong and fast signal (2.4g). The Prime and Netflix apps both connect. Then the recordings fail to play on the minibox CS2217. Why won't the little box talk to the big box ? Fast start enabled, in fact boxes never get turned off ..set to 24 hours. I KNOW the wifi is good, I should NOT need to connect ethernet cables. If the wifi hardware of the minibox is not fit for purpose, please just tell us, and we could use an ethernet wifi bridge or similar. But I don't really want to spend £30 on something if I don't need to.

To answer you prime question, there is nothing in the networking specifications that says boxes must respond to ICMP messages (the protocol used for ping). In fact a large amount of equipment does not respond especially core routers. There are many ways to see if a path is active. As to your other problem as I do not have those boxes I’m unable to help.

In the Hub 3 Admin Menu >> Connected devices

If you can see the 360 and Mini360 listed on the 2.4GHz band
with an IP that usually confirms they are present and connected.

Have you tried using  Ping from the Hub 3 :

    Hub 3 Admin Menu >> Advanced Settings >> Tools >> Ping    192.168.0.xxx

I've pinged from everywhere, like the previous commentor mentions, the boxes are not obliged to respond (conveniently) Both boxes are always connected, I'm just trying to find out why the Minibox will not retrieve the recordings from the Main box (error CS2217) with a good fast and strong wifi.  Although most "VIP"s will tell you to but the boxes on 2.4ghz, this is quite often the most congested band on a home network with most devices defaulting to it. I've put the Hub into modem mode, hooked up a Linksys dual band router and put the Mini360 on 5ghz and the Mainbox on 2.4ghz  letting the router do the cross band repeating...recordings are playing (for now) and the apps connect faster then before (no spinning circle, instant home pages) I'll give it a day, but I'm not very confident that it will not drop out again since the fault is random.

Check if WiFi is inadeqaute by running an Ethernet cable to the mini box, if box then works you have your answer.

Have my answer ? that the Virgin Minibox is useless for recordings playback ? If streaming from the internet via wifi is flawless (and it is) why is streaming from the main box on the same network such a problem ? Anyway, I don't have a 50 meter ethernet cable.

Well I would not expect a very good WiFi signal 50 meters away from any VM hub.
