V6 Obsolete - Nuisance Calls

Hi, We keep getting calls, about 2-3 a day from people reporting to be from Virgin. I've asked if they are Virgin Media or working on behalf of them, they keep telling me they are Virgin Media, but I doubt this.

They keep trying to tell us that the boxes we currently have, 3 V6 boxes, and no longer going to be supported and we must upgrade. Can I ask if this is true?

We had a similar experience last year when they were trying to get us to upgrade our package early, and telling us we should upgrade or face additional costs before my contract expiry date! When I told them that actually we have a current issue with one of my boxes and would like that fixed first before I do anything they then told me the best way was to upgrade with them otherwise I would be charged a fee of £60 for an engineer. Obviously I did not do this and called Virgin direct and the issues was resolved, with no cost!

So I do not really trust these cold calls anymore and believe they are blatantly lying to me?

  • V6 boxes (running TiVo-software) are only obsolete in the sense that they are not available to new-TV customers. They are fully supported for existing customers, and those who have the legacy TiVo's can upgrade to V6 should they prefer.

TV360 boxes use the same hardware as V6, but run fundamentally different software, in the same way as a Windows 10 can migrate to Windows 11 but then runs completely different software. Android vs Apple is another, probably better, analogy.

VM have been encouraging migrations from TiVo/V6 > TV360 for many years now, but these remain 100% voluntary. Their tactics for encouraging conversions do alter from month-to-month, and sadly yours is not the first post to report this sort of approach.

If you are happy with your V6 (and TiVo-software), then there is no need to change.

Out of curiosity what is the benefit to VM of getting (contented) V6 customers to migrate to 360? Is there greater potential for streaming revenue? Better user analytics?

They don't have to pay TiVo for the licence for that user

TiVO is bought in third party firmware. Horizon V360 is “in house” developed firmware from VMs parent company. I’ll leave you to decide on the economics.

Opt out of marketing ( there is an option in your VM account). That should stop the calls, and emails with the 'upgrade' con. Your boxes aren't obsolete, VM wants to fob you off with an inferior system to save themselves money on Tivo software.
