Recording in HDR

I recently watched Game of thrones (the first 4 episodes) by streaming it from Sky Showcase as I missed it when it was on so I couldn't record it.

I've recorded it from episode 5 to 8 from Showcase and it has recorded as SDR, whereas, when I watched it by streaming it was in HDR.

Is there a reason for this, is there a way I can record in HDR, possibly a setting on the 360 box?

  • The broadcast channels are not HDR other than some of the UHD channels.  Showcase isn't one of those.

I've tried this with another couple of programmes on showcase and it is showing up as HDR on streaming and SDR on recording in the detailed signal info and the difference in the picture is very noticeable.

I have a new Sony bravia 8..could it be anything to do with the TV?

Another peculiarity is when I record I'm able to use subtitles, but when I stream it subtitles aren't available.

I think the subtitles only appear after broadcast for some of those sky shows.  Very annoying.

Apart from a very few UHD broadcasts there is nothing in HDR, so there are no HDR broadcasts for the HD GoT. However for streaming Sky has mastered HDR (HLG to be specific) for its content including HD as it wishes to avoid creating separate SDR and HDR versions for every device. A single HD HDR encode simplifies it all especially for on-demand content where adaptive bitrate streaming can handle network fluctuations.

Thanks, I didn't see your comment when I replied. I'm afraid your answer is slightly beyond me although I got the gist of it. I suppose if I want, what appears to be a better picture I'll have to watch the streaming version rather than my recording.

As I mentioned, the problem with this is that subtitles aren't available
