New 360 remote / upgrade needs to be nearer box to work than the old one.

I recently received a 360 remote from Virgin and ran the upgrade but the remote seems weaker than the old one. Needs to be nearer to the box and is often unresponsive and 'laggy'. I have rest and repaired several times but there is no improvement. Tried different batteries but just the same. Any suggestions?

The remote controls should be capable of operating at the same range as the previous remote control.
