Nearly got an unwanted TV360 upgrade

I got an e-mail a few days ago saying the  Virgin TV box I currently have is using old software, and needs upgrading.  I thought this was referring to the old Tivo I have, as I recently tried to use iPlayer and was told this is no longer supported on that device.  I was told I could upgrade to a new Virgin TV360 box at no extra cost.

I'd assumed I was being offered a TV360 box to replace the Tivo, but wanted to investigate further, so I clicked on the link in the email expecting to get more detail of what the upgrade involved.  Instead I was just taken straight to the package upgrade page with no obvious information on what I could expect from a TV360 upgrade.  I had assumed the link was broken, and gave up.

Imagine my surprise when today I have received an email saying I was getting an upgrade to a TV360 box, with a separate TV360 mini (which you can’t record onto), replacing the existing V6 and Tivo.  It looks like simply clicking the link in the email fires off the upgrade process with-out any notification or confirmation!

Having previously been offered a full TV360 upgrade, I know this wouldn’t fit with our lifestyle, so it’s not something I want to upgrade to.  Fortunately I was able to contact support via the chat-bot and cancel the upgrade.

I do think more clarity is needed as to what to expect from a TV360 upgrade, and I really don’t think it’s helpful to have the upgrade process triggered immediately when clicking on the link, without some form of "are you sure?” step!

There's photos of the various boxes at https://www.virginmedia.com/care/tv-fault/which-tv-box

TiVo & V6 boxes both run TiVo-software. TV360 & V6 both run on the same physical box, with the substantially different firmware. TiVo is very recording-centric with numerous streaming options added, whereas TV360 is very online-centric with recording retrofitted for the UK market.

TiVo's cannot be converted and are box-swapped for TV360 - either master or mini-depending on your setup. V6 are reformatted and software-migrated into TV360-master. The basic rule is that each home only needs 1 x master box, the additional multi-room boxes can be minis.

BBC iPlayer has been removed from the TiVo, but remains fully supported on the V6.

      Knows their stuff

Very good, but its VM that need to give the info to customers so they can make an informed decision. Most customers won't be aware of this forum.  Also they need to make clear of all the Tivo functions they'll lose.

Instead they hide  behind the vague and incorrect 'upgrade'  word. It implies getting all you have now, plus more, which isn't true.  One word isnt sufficient info.

No tech provider is ever likely to give a line-by-line breakdown of every single function in a particular software version, and use that to provide a comprehensive comparison with other software versions.

Highlighting negative aspects of newer software is not something I've previously known anyone in the tech industry do.

  • It's absolutely useless, don't change! It's a downgrade not an upgrade, regret the day I did it,, contract ends next year, will be cancelling on the day

  • Thank you for this information. I was unable to sign into VM as the link they sent kept saying it had expired. So i tried to phone. Luckily I couldn’t get through
