Main 360 box not connecting to 2nd 360 box

I have 2 virgin 360 boxes. The main one upstairs and 2nd downstairs. Both boxes will not connect to each other unless the one in the other room is switched on. So I can’t watch recordings from one box on the other. Google suggests boxes need to be on active start which they are. So no idea what the problem is?

Is there a way to set one box as the default for recordings?

You can fine tune the recordings between boxes by clicking on the red Record button, then on the next screen click Advanced Options, then on the next screen click on Choose TV Box, then select the box you want the recording to be made on, then click on Record. That program will then be recorded on that box going forward, even if the default recording box is one of the others.

When setting up a new series link go to Advanced and select which box you want the recording to be made on. It will then be recorded on that box going forward. If though you've already got a series link set up for a particular program and want to change it so it will record on the other box then you need to cancel that series link, and then set it up to record again, using the advanced options when you press record.

Playback means box-to-box streaming, so when you tried playback it failed as "other" box was not awake. Fast Start (best as the hard drive stays spun up) and Active Start are the only standby modes that keep enough of the box alive for multi‑room playback to work reliably.

Like the OP I have two 360 boxes. When not in use the box in the 'other' room is on standby. Sometimes the saved programme is on the box in the other room and when I try to access it, I get the red circle and an error message saying 'that the other box cannot be opened' or words to that effect. If I go to the other room and switch the box on then all works fine. The same happens in reverse if I am in the other room. They are both on wireless connection to a Hub 5 in the room in between them. The signal is strong. I have tried switching each box and the hub of and on after a while to no effect.

If I go to the other room and switch the box on then all works fine...I have tried switching each box and the hub of and on after a while to no effect.

Go to Settings > System > Standby power consumption.
There are 3 options:- Fast Start, Active Start, and Eco(slow start)
The first two options are best if you have a mini box and want to watch a recording on it.

If you try to set a recording via the TVGo app when the 360 is in Eco mode then it won't work as the box appears to be offline to the app.  It would also appear to be offline to VM so they would be unable to test for faults.

If you have two or more main boxes and you wish to a recording made on the other box then again both boxes need to be switched on, and if standby mode also in either Fast Start or Active Start mode in order to connect to each other.

      Hi stjamespark

      Welcome to the Community Forums.
Sorry to hear of your concerns with your multi-room feature on your set-top boxes.

Just to double check, do you have two main 360 boxes or is one in your a mini box?
If you have a main 360 and a mini, both boxes will need to be on, as the mini box does not have a hard drive to storage it's own data.

  • Hi alled,

If newapollo's advice hasn't helped is the main 360 box upstairs because that's where your hub is and you are streaming downstairs to a mini box.

You could try setting the main box to fast start or even swapping the boxes around.

    Hi alled

It's possible that the link between them has been lost which can be rectified by rebooting your hub and both 360's so they perform a new handshake.
