LG TV constantly switching Filmmaker mode on and off

Hi All,

Recently when I've tried to watch Game of Thrones using On Demand on my main Virgin box it causes my LG TV to switch picture settings every few seconds.

I've tried turning off Filmmaker mode. I've switched the HDMI port. I've been into the additional picture settings and nothing seems to stop the picture from flicking back and forth in the mode settings.

The only other time I've seen the picture settings change is when watching TNT Sports Ultimate. This switches the picture mode but stays in that mode until I change channel.

It's impossible to watch anything when this happens.

  • If you have Match frame rate set to Oon the 360 box try turning it to Off to see if it makes any difference.

First thing to do is disable Auto Picture Mode to stop the LG from automatically changing its picture preset. Also select the 360's HDMI resolution to 4K (instead of auto) as this makes the 360 do all the scaling and outputting to 2160p, thus preventing mode flapping — no more constant switches between 1080p and 2160p mid-playback.

  • Hey Paul555, thank you for reaching out and  we are so sorry to hear about your LG TV issues.

Did any of the above advice help at all?

I have the exact same problem and none of the fixes mentioned above have fixed it. On my TV the mode keeps switching into HLG HDR and back again every few seconds. This makes the picture go brighter then darker.....

It only happens when watching GOT!

  • Also have an LG tv and have disabled everything related to pictures changes, nothing “auto” is enabled anywhere and done what the other 2 comments suggest but this still happens to me.
It is also only this one program on virgin tv that does this. Very strange, very annoying

I don't watch GOT or use Filmmaker mode but I do have an LG TV and there have been updates to the TV recently have you checked your TV is fully updated to the latest software just to rule out any conflicts there.

  • I have this problem too, it started at around Season 3 episode 7 and has become unwatchable by season 4. Tried on LG, Panasonic and Hisense TVs with three different 360 boxes, all the same. There's also a very thin white line at the bottom of the screen.

I've tested GOT series 3, episodes 7 and 8, also GOT series 8 episodes 3 and 4 on my LG OLED48C46LA without any problems on either Sky Showcase or Sky On Demand Ultra HD

It's the HD version not the UHD version that causes the issues here.

On 8x03 for example do you get the HD  version in HLG [which to me is an error on HD programming anyway, no one else including Sky have HLG on HD]? Here it then flicks in and out of HLG throughout the programme which depending on TV set up will change picture mode and cause momentary blackouts as that happens. It plays through on my older LG without that as I have the same picture mode, but with the HLG HDR sign coming up every time it goes back into HLG, and with the colour / brightness changing when it changes back to non HLG mode.

I can also see it if I have the LG TV's info up which shows HLG HDR and BT.2020 when it is in HLG which it then flicks out of briefly and then back into.

I have the Virgin box upscaling to 4K [via the auto setting on HDMI resolution], but switching it to 1080 makes no difference. Can you try that episode on your TV with the Virgin box at 1080 resolution as a test?

  • I have the exact same issue. LG TV and only happens when watching Game of Thrones
