Internet connection required for live TV (Sky sports) on 360?

Hi there,

I've been happily watching test match cricket on Sky sports on my 360 box all day, but I've noticed twice that my internet connection has dropped for a minute or so and that both times this happened my Sky sports immediately cut out.

I can't believe the internet is required for this service, surely it's transmitted down the separate coax line.

Is my seamless TV viewing really reliant on a stable internet connection?

The DOSIS internet & the broadcast TV come down the same cable using different frequency ranges. If there are issues with the local fibre node or any of the amplifiers or wiring downstream of it, both services may be affected.

  • Hi there,

Welcome back to the Community Forums.

Sorry to hear that some service issues disrupted the match on Friday for you. I'd just like to mirror what nodrogd has advised. The service does come through the same cabling so depending on where the fault is on the network, it might affect all of your services.

How've things been since posting? Do let us know if you've had any further issues

  • I know that with the 360 box that you do need an internet connection to watch recordings (unlike the V6 and TiVo boxes), so may be the same applies to live TV.

The linear feed of broadcast channels should be unaffected by an internet outage, caveats by nodrogd's point above.

There could be other issues if the channel has an interactive element that would be internet-based.

  • Hi booner,

Just watching the hundred on channel 532 and removing the ethernet cable didn't affect the picture or the buffering of the channel, (could still rewind), obviously the red button option wouldn't work and the watch from start option wasn't available as they both require a network connection.
