Came home from a weeks holiday to find my entire collection of treasured recordings deleted!!

Just come back from a holiday expecting to free up some space manually for new recordings only to find EVERYTHING is gone. No scheduled recodings. The box appeared to have gone dead, so I powered it off and on again and all seemed fairly normal, but then I swear I heard the hard drive make a clunk and the box rebooted itself again. Now there's nothing recorded and nothing scheduled. I called the support number and was told just to monitor to see if it happens again! This may be the last straw for me with Virgin, my package has just been hiked by £20pm at the end of an intro offer. What can be done? Any helpful advice appreciated.

  • Sounds like a drive failure, or close to, so needs replacing.

I'm unsure how you can blame VM for a hardware failure. Mechanical drives fail over time.

OK thanks for that. Is it possible to raise a call for replacement via this forum?

Yes, however it can take several days for a reply from VM on here.

Some people don’t like me stating fact, but I will re-emphasise again Virgin’s T&Cs with regard to recordings. Recording of programmes is provided for the purpose of viewing a programme at a more convenient time (time-shifting). Treasured recordings or not, the HDD on your box should never be seen as an archive. The channel/content owners won’t have it any other way. They have successfully stopped most of the permanent archiving we had with video taping of live material, leaving the only real option of either buying downloads or purchasing DVDs.

When you get your replacement 360 you'll have access to Catch-up and apps which may enable you to watch some of the stuff you recorded.
