A few questions about TV 360.....

We have two Tivo boxes that are starting to show their age so I'm looking at changing to the 360 boxes because we'd still like to b able to record but I just have a couple of questions first, which I'm hoping this forum can help me with.  Apologies if these have come up before.

  1. We currently have the 1gb broadband with a SuperHub 4.  Would I have to change this to a 5 or 6?
  2. If I do have to change the hub, does all the existing coaxial cabling from the outside just go straight in to the SH5/6?
  3. I have my SH4 in modem-only mode to an Asus router.  I assume the SH5/6 also have modem-only modes?
  4. The SH4 and Asus router are upstairs in my office, not next to my TV downstairs.  I believe the 360 box can use wi-fi - according to the Netflix speed check on the app on the TV, we get 50mbps wi-fi downstairs - will that be good enough for the 360 box?
  5. Does the 360 box make use of the coaxial cable from outside like the Tivo box does?
  6. If it does, does any of it need to change for the 360 box or is it simply unplug from the Tvo and straight into the 360?

Many thanks for your help
Dave

  • First off, be clear that "TiVo" refers to two things, and thus which box you have - check hereif you're not sure. TiVo & V6 both run TiVo-software. V6 & TV360 use the same hardware, but with different software.

Connectivity is identical between them. The TiVo has one single co-ax feed which carries both broadcast TV & a 10Mb/s internal modem. V6 & TV360 have the same co-ax feed for broadcast TV but then need a connection via your home-hub for all things internet. Ethernet is always recommended given a choice, stable wireless can suffice.

OnDemand & streaming requirements can vary, but broadly HD needs around ~5Mb/s to reliably work. UHD maybe around ~25Mb/s. https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306is as good a help file as any.

You keep your hub 4. BTW there is no hub 6.

I'm not sure what you will get, might be a 360 and a Stream, but for whatever boxes you get use an Ethernet cable for reliability.

  • If you followed japitts advice to check if you have the old TiVo box or 2 V6 boxes then the advice might differ.

If you have 2 old TiVo boxes these will be replaced but it might be with 1 360 main box and either a mini box or a flex/stream box or possibly 2 of the streaming boxes if you don't specify you want a box to record with.

If they are V6 boxes they won't be replaced, you will just be sent new remotes and the boxes will receive a software update to 360 Horizon software.

    Many thanks all for your replies.  To answer a few of the points raised;

We have the old TiVo box, not the V6 running TiVo software.

    My mistake mentioning SH6; I meant SH5x.

The SH4 and router are in a different room to the TV so whether we go TV360 or Stream, they will have to be on wi-fi (powerline might be a possibility)

At least from a cables & connectivity point of view, we are all set.  I think the only decision left for us is whether we still want the recording capability.

    Thanks all

      Dialled in

Do be careful about this because others have reported that Virginmedia sent them something different to what they ordered.

Good point, esp with Stream now being the default.
