The default process is that when you close down one VM account, the phone number with that account also closes (unless you port the number to another provider). You get a new phone number with the new account.
Does VM own the number you have lost? You can check that below

We would need to advise that we cannot complete a number port from one Virgin Media account to another and therefore would unfortunately need to advise that the information you've been offered is incorrect.
Furthermore, for a landline number port to do through, both landline services would be required to be active to complete successfully.
