VoIP - using a 3rd party provider

Hello,

I'm a VM broadband (only) customer with no landline/phone. I want to use/bring my phone number as I'm currently with A&A (Andrews & Arnold) VoIP provider.

a) Do I need to take the phone service from Virgin?

b) or can I just utilise the broadband only?

How do I go about using A&A on my broadband as their support team said I need to get in touch with Virgin.

  • You can bring your A&A voip services to VM broadband. I’m using it now. I have my hub 5 in modem mode and the VoIP ATA is connected via Ethernet to my main switch.
If you want to use the hub 5 in router mode, you just connect the voip phone via Ethernet to the hub 5. It should work fine.

yes  broadband only however VM will not support you with 3rd party VoIP you connect by ethernet and may need to use modem mode and own router

Ah sounds like it's possible. I have their Hub5 router.

I have a Yealink W52P SIP-W52P phone that I've previously used on PlusNet broadband. I wonder if I could plug that in and configure

  • "In order to add on VoIP we need to add telephone line services, and for weekend chatter the package price would be 40GBP per month (calls on weekend only )
Evening & Weekend chatter for 45GBP (calls on Evening & Weekend )
Anytime chatter for 50GBp per moth ( where you can call calls anytime you want )"

    From Virgin Customer Services.

So if anyone if reading - you seemingly can't unless taking out their telephone line services

Oh wow.... Thanks for the note. VM said I can't. I will try this tomorrow after unpacking.

Thanks loads for the comment. 👍🏻

Yes I agree it is very simple. Back in winter of 2017 we unplugged our 3x Cisco VOIP phones ( we have 3 VOIP lines ) from the Plusnet router and connected to a VM Hub in Router mode and they all reconnected to Sipgate without any adjustments.

The VOIP phones are rock solid via VM internet.  Really not a minute of trouble.

Thanks. Just frustrating that customer service says one thing and forum says another.  But I will try what the fellow community members have said to see if it works.

    @Hoggs_  is wrong

I had two VOIP lines with A&A over VM broadband for a few months before leaving, no problems at all.

VM don't even need to know that you are using VOIP.  It's just a few more bytes to them.

I am glad I am wrong. I posted this a couple weeks ago and not had much in terms of comments. So I reached out to VM and they gave me the above comment about needing the phone line services.

I am happy to try @avi68 suggests.

You should be able to plug VoIP kit into ANY ISPs router. You can even do it temporarily at a holiday let (as I did once a few years ago in an area where I knew the mobile service was non existent). VM were just trying to flog you their own service (which isn’t even true VoIP yet).
