phone number transfer

Hello i am try it find out if it is possible to transfer a phone number from one virgin media account to another virgin media account.

on the 1st December this year my father passed away and he had the house phone ( land line ) on his account plus his broadband.

i have a virgin media account at the same address and i have my broadband and TV and i think that come with a land line phone number but have never used it.

what i am trying to do is find out if the phone number that went with my fathers account can be transferred to my account as i don't want to lose the house phone as it is the only way that my fathers old friends can get in contact with me.

does anyone know how i can go about this change so that i can keep the old phone number

OFCOM allows you to keep numbers only for the purpose of transferring to a new provider, not for transferring between accounts with the same provider. As such, you never own a number, you lease it as part of your package & when you give that package up the number has to be released unless you go to another provider.

A member of staff will confirm, but usually the only way to keep a number like this is to change the name on your father's account to yours.

PS. I have moved your query to the Home Phone support board, as Forum Staff do not monitor the Chatter boards.

  • Hello hertsmil.

    Thanks for your post.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your father

Regarding the number transfer nodrogd has explained, we're very sorry the previous number wouldn't be able to be carried over to your account.

We can see if it's possible, although we don't want to promise it can be done.

If you don't mind, I’ll need to send you a private message to pass security.
If you can check the logo top right of your screen that would be great.

  • Personally, I would approach this by porting the number to a dedicated VOIP provider. Then you will have the number on a dedicated VoIP provider, regardless of what internet service provider you use.

Then you can use any off the shelf VoIP phone, or you can purchase an ATA adapter to use a standard phone with the VoIP account, or you can use a softphone such as MicroSIP to log in to the VoIP account on a PC.

Check out A&A. Porting Landlines to VoIP

Wait until any contract with VM is almost over though.
