Phone not ringing

My traditional line worked well for years until approx 6 months ago it developed a fault and VM insisted to swap it over to the digital line with my phone plugged into the back of the router.

I can make calls no problem at all but the phone does not ring at all but it has a flashing red light which does flash when someone is calling me, but yet not ringer.

I rang VM tonight after getting transferred here there and everywhere now my phone is getting the blame despite me trying it in another providers VoIP setup  and it works fine but not on VM.

I don't get No Caller ID nothing except a red light flashing. If this is to carry on I will switch away from VM as there is certainly cheaper companies out there.

Another thing that gets my goat up is why does VM still charge for line rental for a phone despite it now going through the broadband line. I'm not on a full fibre line its still coax from the green box up the road

Your phone is fine, so the fault lies elsewhere. Call VM to ask for a hub replacement as a faulty hub is the most likely problem. If that doesn't work then you need a re‑provision of the VOIP profile by someone in the back office.

How old is the phone? Some models from the early 2000s and before need a ringing capacitor in the adapter from the back of the hub. The VM supplied adapter does not have one

Some have had success with this for old phones

but no guarantees it will fix your specific issue so purchase at your own risk.

Have you tried a different phone in your own hub setup? Ideally one from the last 10 years.

Can you borrow one from a friend, family member or neighbour to do a test?

This will help establish of you have a hub problem or a phone problem.

The fact the red light is flashing for an incoming call suggests that part of the phone is detecting the ringing signal and the hub is providing a ringing signal. We have seen this before on here with phones of a particular age range.

When a line is migrated to the VM hub, some of the calling features can be reset and disappear so you will need a VM person to check caller ID is set on your line.

The phone service from the VM hub works in the same way as the service from the telephone wall socket. You pay VM for a telephone service and use of a landline phone number which is bundled as part of your VM package. It is just the method of delivery that has changed so the cost remains the same.

Test the line with a different phone. If the issue is the same, you'll then confirm that you have a VM problem and not a phone issue (unless the other location you tested the phone in was also a VM phone line from the hub).

What model is the BT phone? BT Advanced phones (with the trueCall screening feature) have been mentioned on here in the past for problems with caller ID via the VM hub.
