Newly built properties cabling while the building works still ongoing

Has anyone managed to book the cabling to be done by VM while building their house or doing major renovation works? I’m struggling to get help from VM as they’re saying I can only book an engineer to come in once I move to the property… I would like for them to come while it’s being wired before plastering and decorating. I don’t want to move in to a newly decorated property and then VM comes in and starts running cables onto my walls etc… can someone advise please?

New VM installs depend on the area. Some will be cable, some FTTP. Either way the new installs are really just from the outside to a Hub inside. TV is supplied by streaming via WiFi or Ethernet cable.  Personally I would be looking at flood wiring the house with Ethernet cables and sockets. All terminating in a central location where the Hub will be placed, along with suitable switches. WiFi can be provided by Access Points connected to the flood wiring.

  • Hi danielvost, thanks for your post on our Community Forums.

I understand that you're currently working with a member of our team on this matter and advise that you continue to work with them as having multiple agents working on the same case can create some confusion.

If you're moving into a new property, you may need to discuss this with our Movers team, which is not a process that we have jurisdiction of on our Community Forums.

    Thanks,

  • I’m asking the community members if anyone been able to find a solution for this situation. The mover’s team failed, i booked a move back in June, the engineer was scheduled for August 8th and engineer didn’t show up. All you are suggesting is to talk to movers team, which I already tried and it didn’t work. Can you please come up with another solution? If I come to a garage will a flat tire and a technician keeps saying just try to pump it up and I’m saying that I’ve tried that already, the tyre is still flat, I think we should try another solution, would you agree?

What is the cabling work you want/expect VM to do at the construction phase?

You seem to be expecting that VM will blow fibre all the way through to your comm's cupboard in your other topic

Full fibre rollout, old cables upgrade | Virgin Media Community - 5665009

but that is less likely to be VM's chosen method for future fibre connections.

Your idea to do as much wiring as possible during construction is sensible but VM is simply not set up to help you in the way you want.

From memory, when similar past topics like this have cropped up, the usual response from VM is that you have to place an order and VM will come and do the installation for you. If you are moving services you give VM your moving date and the same thing happens.

Where VM has done something along the lines you want, in past topics on here, a passing VM tech has provided some coax cable in advance or a local manager has agreed to provide some coax cable to pre-wire. These were just ad-hoc arrangements agreed on an individual basis.

For most VM installations in the past, a customer might need coax cable throughout the home to distribute TV and connect the broadband.

In the future VM world, the only thing VM is going to provide you with is a broadband connection from which other services will be provided. Internal coax cable will not be required, nor internal telephone cable.

The answer to your query at the moment is to provide a duct/conduit to take a VM connection from your external connection point through to your comm's cupboard as suggested on your earlier topic.

After that it will be your internal network that has to do the heavy lifting so flood wire your new home with ethernet cable and/or invest in some decent wi-fi equipment.

For 99% of installs it's up to you where the VM cable enters the property.  For cabled areas there is a box on the outside wall and the cable generally enters the property there.  For FTTP areas I believe the box is located inside the property beside the Hub.

There is no longer any co-ax cable stapled all around the inside.  The TV for new installs is via IPTV, so over Wifi or ethernet cable.  Note VM do not do any ethernet cables, this is all up to you.

For a new build/refurb I strongly suggest you get the electrician to install ethernet cables and run them all back to a central location, e.g. under a stairwell etc.  This would be where you would want the cable from VM to enter and locate the Hub.  Wifi can be provided by PoE access points located around the property.  It really is a good time to get the property sorted for the future as all this work can be done prior to plastering etc.

Any contact for a local engineer who can do some cabling…

  • @Adduxi you keep repeating the same thing about my home network wiring which is done by my electrician, I don’t expect VM to do that. I need VM engineer to run a cable from outside the property to inside to the centre point from which all of the home network cables are wired throughout the house.

Okay, glad you are ahead of the game in that respect.  Good luck with the project and hopefully VM can sort something out.  If not, I guess the standard "conduit and pull rope" might suffice.

Put in a conduit with a pull rope from the omnibox outside to the inside comm's cupboard and a VM tech should be able to run the cable through that during installation. No need for any non-standard installation methods.

        Hello danielvost.

        Thanks for replying.

I can't promise anything concrete can be done right now in regards to getting the cables installed before the building work is completed.

However, saying that I am happy to go away and see what we can do.

If you don't mind, I'll need to send you a private message to take some details.
If you can check the envelope at the top right of your screen, that would be great.
