WiFi Speed is fluctuating.

Recently switched from 70mbps to Virgin 125. Noticed that the WiFi speed fluctuates a lot. I have done some speed test on my phone in the same place within minutes apart and it changes a lot I think. When I was streaming with BT on 70mbps my tv never buffered but it is buffering with Virgin's supposedly faster broadband. Is this normal or there is something wrong?

  • Hi Redis,

We're sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your WiFi connection.

There are so many things that can influence a WiFi connection that are beyond our control, some of which include (but are not limited to) a fish tank being in the same room, walls being built with concrete instead of brick and the number of devices connected.
Please have a look at the troubleshooting and advice here: https://virg.in/wifisos
The Hub's location could also be causing the coverage problem, so we do need to check the positioning of it. Can you please ensure the following.

    •    It's out in the open if possible.
    •    If positioned near the TV that it's next to it, not behind it.
    •    It's away from large bodies of water (e.g. fish tanks).
    •    It's away from baby monitors, cordless phones and radios.
    •    It's away from microwaves.

We do have a WiFi guarantee, there is more information here
If that doesn't help, you can download our Connect App which will allow you to scan areas of your home and will offer help. You can view more information on that here: https://virg.in/connectapp

Please do pop back to us should you have any questions or need any further support and we'd be happy to help 😊

It would be super helpful if you could select "Full test"
so we see the Upstream speed, the Jitter, Latency and Packet loss
for the Hub and also for your mobile Wi-Fi device.

But looking at the results we see, the last test run shows the speed to the Hub being normal,
the group of tests suggest that the Wi-Fi device might not be going any faster because it is connected on the 2.4 GHz band.

Some older laptops and mobiles like the Samsung A12 don't support 5GHz Wi-Fi
so mid 50 Mb/s is about their limit, but that is more than plenty for reliable operation.
