Unusably slow speed only at certain times of day

On weekday evenings and weekend afternoons  the internet is so slow it's practically unusable. It takes web pages minutes to load (some fare better than others - for instance Twitter and Google won't load at all). The weird thing is that speeds come back as normal or at least usable if I can load up a speedtester - yet nothing displays. Makes me think this is some kind of DNS or packet issue?

It's the same on all devices over ethernet and wifi. Have tried all the usual hub resets etc.

The fact this is happening during what would generally be considered "peak" hours makes me think this is Virgin's issue and to do with overcongestion? Any tips or direction as to where I can forward this to Virgin so they can look into it? I've tried the local area fault number and nothing is reported.

Setup a BQM here and it will monitor your circuit 24 x 7  www.thinkbroadband.com/ping  Post a link to the shared live graph when it is up and running, for comment.

Also run this speed test in both peak and quiet times, and post the results here. Run the FULL set of tests.

If it is over subscription, it may take a long time for VM to fix it, and there is nothing you can do to alleviate this problem, if that is the case.

Thanks for the tips. I'll set up the BQM later today.

I don't think the samknows full test will work during the next peak slowdown/outage. I tried it on Sunday and it would run the basic test but no more. That's why it seems a bit of an unusual problem to me.

  • Graph from today. The usual peak time thing. The big red line is where I turned off the router.

He Blue2424, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry to hear you are having some internet issues.

Also thank you for putting your BQM here, I am going to send you a PM as I would like to run some tests with you. Cheers
