throttled upload speed

I am a live streamer and had the 350 package which i found my upload speed being erratic and my livestream kept lagging. called virgin media and they advised me to upgrade to the 1gb connection which i did and after a few days started to see the same problem with my upload speed. after many phone calls to virgin media they have now said that my upload speed is being throttled! so what a waste of money since i upgraded to the top tier internet. con

So what is your upload speed showing by speed test sites?

VM do have the ability to throttle which might be down to the limited upstream that you and others are causing problems for others for high pings

    limit your bit rate streaming

        Hi pringlesdomain

        Welcome to the community forums

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with live streaming.

I have taken a look at the systems at our side and even though you mention your upload speed being low, this all looks good at our side. You can run the Sam Know speed test yourself here . Ensure you're connected to the Virgin Media network with no VPN enabled and this should show you speeds at the router and at the device.

You do however, have a power level issue with your download, they are not quite in spec as ranging between 11.9 to 13.9, which is more than we would like. This will need an technician to investigate further. I would still recommend running the checks on Sam Knows for your upload concerns so can see what the speeds show for your devices at your side.

To resolve the downstream power level concern, please join me on private message so I can locate your account and pass account security. You can see your private messages at the top of the page, in the envelope icon or if you're using a smaller device, you can see your private messages by clicking on the Virgin Media logo at the top right and select 'Messages' from the drop down.

  • Did you actually do the realspeed test as asked? I also wouldnt expect congestion to end your stream, just to cause buffering instead.

    As said VM dont throttle.

VM won't deliberate apply throttling, but if the user is exceeding the available uplink capacity the result is the same.

Don't assume that the issue is not caused by overloading at the receiving end of the stream.
At times gripes for Twitch and Teams have flooded these pages.

6000 as a bit rate for a 1080p stream is too low,  perhaps that is 6 Megabits per second.
Regardless, use a speed test to confirm more than the intended rate is available via your VM connection.

    On our wavelength

Although the above messages are interesting, they have all missed the important point that the OP was blatantly mis-sold, ie ‘oh you have a problem, well upgrade (ie pay us more money), and it’ll be solved.’ Such tactics are actually illegal, but still!

Firstly to the OP, are you still within the 14 day statutory cooling off period since the ‘upgrade’? If so then I’d suggest you contact VM and exercise your right to go back to your original contract and price.

It is far more likely that you are in an area which is oversubscribed, ie more customers than the infrastructure there can properly handle, such a thing generally effects the upload rather than the download, exactly as you have seen. If this is, indeed, the case, there is no quick fix.You simply need to wait for VM to upgrade the equipment in your area, or find and alternative supplier.
