Something funny happening with my network.

Ive had 1GB for over a year now.

I am using a SH5 which is switched to modem mode and Im using a Unifi network.  Have had this configuration for years and its been failsafe without any issues.

The other week my son noticed the network as slow and he was downloading a game at about 300Mbps so he commented to me about it.  I also got an alert to tell me the network speed had dropped. (I do a hourly speed test inside my network using Ookla and track that so it alerts me if there is a performance drop)

There wasnt an issue inside my network and a few hours later the problem righted itself and normal performance was resumed.

Ive just come back from a short weekend away, and I saw my network was laggy again.

The unifi history shows I was getting the full 1Gbps up until the 23rd june and then its been alll over the place.

The graph shows the dropping and peaking of the performance.

This is todays view and I can see Im getting packet loss and also some high latency problems.

The SH5 log is saying the following message, but I cant remember what it means!  I think it is saying there is a signal problem!!

Anyone know if there is a problem in area 26?

"he was downloading a game at about 300Mbps"

It is quite normal for file servers to limit the download rate to ensure all have a fair share.

"I do a hourly speed test inside my network using Ookla"

Would you be happy if every customers on your street cabinet randomly squandered bandwidth in this way ?

Given VM automatically test a bunch of customers hourly it's not that big of a thing. You'd love the guy who tests his 3 Gb FTTP every 3 minutes for more 'data points'. That wasn't a typo.

As said above, doing regular speedtests is not gonna help much, especially if you're a gamer.   There a good reason why speedtest sites always check Latency & Speed separately !!

If anyone want to see why, setup a command line ping to something like Google or BBC using the "-t" parameter so it runs continuously.  Then run a speedtest at the same time, and watch the ping times !!   See example below where the Latency goes up to 150-200mS duing the speedtest !!

        I'm not a gamer so don't care ðŸ˜€

Dream Machine... (my utility room is more like a data centre than a simple house setup, I work from home and have some interesting kit set up)

The issue is looking like its outside.  Sometimes the VM service status is saying there is an issue and most of the time its saying no issue.

I know my stuff, but wanted a simple answer to a simple quesiton... are other people in the area having a problem too,  Trying to guess whether its the cabinet or the distribution point.  I've had cabinet problems before where they did some tinkering for something else (routine or another person) and then crapped out my signal.

        Hi tigga

Welcome back to the community forums

Sorry to hear that of your concerns with your service. I've checked the systems at our side and cannot see anything raised in the area.

Do you have any third party networking devices in the home that you've fully checked over and are sure are not the issue. Have you tried testing the service when it's just our equipment to see if you get these same packet loss and speed drops?

If the issue is still ongoing and an engineer is sent to investigate further, there is a £25 charge should they identify that the issue was caused by the customer's own set up and any activity outside of our acceptable use policy.

the packet loss is a problem but your latency looks mostly stable
