Slow download speed, high ping, latency spikes

Hello, I have recently switch to Virgin from other provider hoping to get more quality broadband in my house.

My current package is M125 Fibre Broadband, I've done some reasearch prior getting contract with Virgin and most of feedbacks were positive, Hovewer, speed and quality of my connection is worst that previous provider.

36.3 Mbps? So where is this mistery 132Mb average speed I have seen on review websites? Also, 30 ping to nearest server (50 miles away) doesn't sound right either.

Would someone be able to help? I have basic IT knowledge but I need someone to tell me where I should start :)

Thanks

Tom

Was that reading taken over WiFi or ethernet?  Only ethernet measurements are valid.   Use this speedtest which will check the speed to the Hub

Use a wired device directly connected to the Hub and run the FULL tests on the SamKnows site.  This will show the speed to your Hub and the speed to your device.

  • That link did not work for me ... however if you google samknows directly ..this should work .. I did but have a hub5 with 250 gb deal ..and the site confirmed what I am paying for.... just saying

https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/     this link works for VM Hubs in Router mode.

The Full test results from this link are what we are interested in because only this test shows the speed to the Hub without problems of the end user's 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connected laptop or mobile.

The same functionality is available for mobiles as the free "SamKnows Realspeed" app

  • Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for all reply,

Looks like there is problem with connection only in my room (shared house).

Downstairs rooms hitting 118mbps in average, in the room where router is I had 130mbps via wifi so not a bad score.

Can I book engineer visit from here? I need to move socket so I can connect my PC via ethernet cable.

    Thanks

    Tom

Hey TomTom1989, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry to hear you are having some speed issues, also a warm welcome to the community.

I've taken a look and I can see everything is looking great from our side, how has it been since Monday?

      Any improvement?

  • Hi,

    Sorry for late response.

I will still need an engineer visit to move socket to my room. I live in shared house and Virgin Media socket is located in other room therefore I had to plug in router there, room is occupied by other tenant which makes it uncomfortable for both of us.

    Thanks

    Tom

VM will only move the socket if requested by and paid for by the contract holder.
