Slow Broadband after upgrading

Hi all

I’ve been on 100mb and at contract renewal upgraded to 250mb in June.
there is no discernible improvement in speed and regular speed tests show around 60-75mb rarely above 80mb.
what’s the problem here?

using hub in modem mode with apple extreme WiFi router and expected better performance.

I would expect the speed upgrade to show up at least sometimes!

any help appreciated.

      do you have any recommendations?

Check with a device connected directly to the Hub by ethernet, to confirm that you are actually getting the 250Mb from VM.

  • Were you seeing the same speed prior to the upgrade?

If so, what made you think upgrading would see faster speeds, considering your wern't seeing full speed on 100Mbps?

Yes same speed before the upgrade.
I naively assumed that an upgrade to a higher speed would actually mean it was delivered, at least some of the time!

      isn’t that how it works?

Usually yes, however, if you have a speed issue with your existing connection it could be due to an problem with the line, which an upgrade could make your connection less reliable.

Check the speed to the HUB here:

What have you done to investigate why your kit is only operating at 60 - 75 Mb/s,
a problem that was apparent even before the upgrade to M250.

Lots of test both wired and wireless.
assumed north London is congested and in 10 years VM have always over promised and under delivered.
I’ll check carls advice and see where it leads.
do you have any wisdom to share?

Just note the HUB must be in router mode for the above test to work.

With Apple kit perhaps jbrennand might be able to throw some light on this one?

First job is to test speed directly on a device connected to the extreme on a cat6a ethernet cable.

What does that get?  Then look in the Hub settings for the "configuration" data pages - what number is in the "Max Data Transfer" box for Upstream chnnels - it is in bps and if still on 100 package will start 1nnnnnnnn if the upgrade worked it will start 3nnnnnnn,

To get >100 you need to be sure devices are connecting on the 5GHz band rather than the 2.4 - is that so ?

What model of Extreme do you have ?

Also... I collect Apple issues... see this list and work through the solutions therein and see if any help.

    APPLE CONNECTION ISSUES

The setting that is critical on the Hub 3 is to have Wi-Fi Security set to WPA2-PSK
this will ensure a fuss free connection with Apple kit.

After a MacOS/iOS update, it may auto turn on Automatic Proxy Discovery for all Wi-Fi networks - so turn it off in network settings as per message 7. In iOs go to Settings>WiFi> tap the blue”I” icon and scroll down and make sure Configure Proxy/‘ is set to off - also that Configure DNS and Configure IP are set to automatic

Also, are you running a VPN - if so turn it off and see if that helps - also disable “Private Relay” if thats switched on in your iCloud settings on the phone/mac.
