Upgrading my broadband

I am a student, sorting out bills for the upcoming year. Ordered the M250 broadband but realised that I want to upgrade to Gig1 broadband.

I have tried on the app, chat box (whatsapp included), and phone number. Nothing seems to work or give me any info. The only thing I get told is that I can change it online, problem is I'm trying to change it online!!

I can't seem to get in contact with anyone a VM.

Anyone able to help?

You might find that you hit a brick wall.   I think you might be better speaking to the Sales team by calling them on 0800 183 1234, especially if you are already connected.

The prices quoted on the web page https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/student  are for new customers only.   See under "The Legal Stuff" section, then directly under the "Just Eat Gift Card" sub section it states, "These prices are for new customers only."

Basically if the account and services have been activated then you are no longer a new customer and regrading/upgrading wouldn't normally get you that low price, plus it would also tie you into a new minimum contract.

If you are up and running but still within the first 14 days of service then you should be able to cancel for free and then re-order, and get the higher Gig1 speed for the new customer price of £29.99.

As a student do you really need waste hard to come by money on additional bandwidth ?

For all real work activities, especially over Wi-Fi it will not make the slightest difference.

I can see where you're coming from but I feel it will make a difference as all my housemates will be online often and the difference isn't even £1/month extra.

If your housemates are all in different rooms and using WiFi rather than ethernet connections, the router will not be sharing 1Gb equally between them. Some may be unhappy with the arrangement.

        Hi again luckyjd

I hope you managed to get the Gig1 for £29.99 via sales.  Best of luck to you and your fellow students/housemates for the future.

EDIT - If you were supplied with a hub 3 then you won't get the increased speed until VM send out a replacement router, either the hub4 or hub5.   If you are sent a replacement hub and it doesn't appear to be working then you will  need to call 0800 953 9500 which is the activation line and have the hub serial number (should be on a sticker on the base) along with your account number and area number which can be found on your bills and contract.
