Very low WIFI after upgrade to Gig 1 broadband

Using Hub4 connected to M4 iMac and iPhone 13.

I have just updated my package to Gig 1 broadband having previously been on M500. Tests I have carried out show that my iMac is connected to the router and recording speeds of 946Mbps download and 105Mbps upload. I got these figures using Sam Knows, which show that the download speed at the router is 1144Mbps.

I believe that these figures may well be prove to be acceptable as I think that my iMac is restricted to 1000Mbps. However checking the WIFI speed with my iPhone right next to the router it is only recording 540Mbps download but 105Mbps upload. I was getting WIFI download speeds the same with my previous M500 package!

I have tried rebooting the hub but it has no effect.

Is the hub suspect?

Your speeds are probably correct. It’s WiFi which is holding you back.

No VPN and no antivirus on iPhone.

I've tried with different iPhones using either VM Connect or Ookla and get the same WIFI results and both Silicon iMacs in my house give the same speeds connected to the Hub4.

I'm convinced that the hub4 is suspect.

That's probably as good as you will get over WiFi. Do you actually need faster speeds on a phone?

Much, much more than apps, don’t jump to conclusions.

If I didn’t need it I wouldn’t have bought it. That, however, isn’t the issue. What is the issue is that I’m still getting the same WIFI speed with Gig1 as I did with M500.

WIFI  isn’t just for the phones but several other devices in my home

Something clearly is wrong and needs to be rectified to ensure that I get the service I have paid for.

Hopefully a mod will be able to shed some light on this issue.

What's the connection speed for each device in the HUB settings (Connected Devices)?

The HUB 4 is Wifi 5 so 540Mbps sounds correct.

I’ve been doing some research and it looks as if you’re right about the hub4 WIFI speeds. A pity this wasn’t made clear at the time of upgrading my package. The hub5 seems to cope a lot better and, hopefully, a kind mod can help me update the router to match the speeds I’m paying for.

I thank you Tudor, Cardiffman282 and  carl_pearce for your input and advice, which is much appreciated.

The remainder offered no advice other than vague assumptions, belittling the comments of a, probably, much older member with not the amount of expertise that they seem to think they have.

If a mod reads this post I would be grateful for a view on obtaining a Hub5 router.

    Many thanks

Hi Pineman 👋 welcome back to the community forum! Thanks for posting.

Sorry to hear you've been experiencing some issues with Wi-Fi speeds since upgrading to 1gig broadband speeds! It's probably best if we run some testing via PM and then we can assess if you would benefit from a new hub. Please keep your eye on your Inbox 📩 in the top right corner of the page.

In the meantime, I will just address a couple of other things that have come up in general regarding broadband speeds. You can find full details of speeds for each package and what to expect here 👉 https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/our-speeds-explained which are for speeds reaching your hub, and then via wire to your devices. We have a different guarantee for Wi-Fi speeds, as there's so many factors outside of our control which can affect these. Including things such as - the capability of devices, conflicting signals or networks, the number of devices on your network, the materials and layout of your home and furniture. We guarantee speeds of up to 30mpbs via Wi-Fi via Wi-Fi MAX 👉 https://www.virginmedia.com/wifi-max

Hopefully I can help improve the performance of your setup regardless. We will return to this public thread with another update when possible. Thanks for your patience! 🌞

The pod arrived ok and within minutes of plugging it in the WIFI signal in the remote area went from about 27mbps to 340mbps. 24 hours later the signal remains at about 340mbps.

The pod is an excellent bit of kit and works beautifully. My thanks to Akua_A for helping resolve my issues.

The fact remains that the performance of the Hub4 when used with Gig1 broadband is not good and I can’t help feeling that, when ordering that package, a warning should be issued or the Hub5 offered as a replacement.

Many thanks to all that contributed constructively.
