Help with inconsistent upload speeds - Low power levels?

I'm currently on the Gig1 service, which always gives me the full speed of approx 1000-1100Mbps download.

However I'm noticing the upload speed keeps dropping to around 15-20Mbps. I'm able to obtain a 100 upload around 50% of the time. I checked my power levels and logs as per below:

I'm also getting a lot of these warnings in my hub logs.

DBC-REQ Mismatch Between Calculated Value for P1.6hi Compared to CCAP Provided Value;CM

US profile assignment change. US Chan ID: 6; Previous Profile: 12 13; New Profile: 11 13.;CM

US profile assignment change. US Chan ID: 6; Previous Profile: 11 13; New Profile: 12 13.;CM

These happen about every 2-3 hours, and I believe they might be related to the issue. Is the US profile referring to upstream?

Also I'm noticing the power levels for my upstream generally drops by about 1dBmV and goes back up again to the tables above. I'm particularly concerned at the DOCSIS 3.1 Upstream channel power being at 34.5, dropping to 33.5 during the day. Does that sound a bit low?

I did have an engineer to check out the inconstant upload, but it was showing 100Mbps at the time of their arrival. Typical! They checked the connections and while they found some dirt in the outside junction box, everything else was fine. We did a hub factory reset and everything too, but I am not sure if they checked the power levels. I've already booked another visit as the issue is not resolved.

Can someone confirm whether these power levels are ok, and if these logs could be related? I'm certain it's not an internal network issue, as the problem exists on both LAN and WiFi, and since my download is always 1000+, my connections are solid.

      Sorry to hear this Jas-Singh685.

How often is this dropping speeds?

Are you finding it happening at various times of the day or is it just random?

Do you have any VPN's connected?

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay. I've been away much of the time and not had chance to monitor this.

This week is much of the same. It's happening at random times, and most of the time, i seem to be getting around 30-40 upload, rather than 100. I'm not using any VPN at all.

Despite the engineer changing the connection and increasing the power levels slightly, the problem isn't any better. I'm also still getting the log messages in my hub

The US profile change happen every 2-3 hours. I've noticed that when the new profile is 12 13, my upload is consistently 100, but when I'm at profile 11 13, my upload drops significantly to below 50. What could be causing these profile changes? The engineer found nothing wrong with my connection quality or strength, and i even tried a new Hub 5.

This is really frustrating as I primarily chose the gig1 package for the upload boost, but most of the time I don't get even 50 upload that the M500 offers.

  • Sorry for the delay in update. Had to reschedule the engineer to today.

Everything was checked and no immediate faults were found, however they did switch over to another connection in the cabinet on our road, and this seems to have boosted the upstream power levels.

They are now sitting between 44 - 42.5. The 3.1 is now at 38.7. Before this wouldn't go above 35.

Anyway will keep an eye on it now. There seems to be an improvment on power levels so hopefully the speeds should be more stable too.

From the Realspeed test, the low Upload speed at the Hub looks like a local service fault.

Check for known faults in your street – do try both methods :

Call the local fault line: 0800 561 0061 – this is an automated number.

    https://www.virginmedia.com/help/check/status/identification/identify

The Upstream Power levels are the transmission power from the Hub to the Street Cabinet and these do vary automatically to maintain the required signal level at the Street Cabinet.

From the levels you are seeing I'd suspect the street cabinet was not far from your home & hence the Hub does not have to work hard to maintain sufficient signal.

  • And it's dropped again one hour later from the last test which was at 101 upload

  • Thanks for the reply. The engineer is due on Friday, though I may need to rearrange the visit as I can’t arrange for someone to be home.

The issue is still there and the upload speed is still fluctuating a lot. I’m seeing uploads of about 35 this morning to the hub then about 101 this evening  I tested these using SamKnows real speed

Can you confirm if my statistics and logs from my hub look normal from my original post?

  • Hi Jas-Singh685

Thanks for posting and welcome to the community. Apologies for any Broadband issues.

How did the engineer visit go, has everything been fixed?
