Half speed hero

Hello
I've been running into a strange issue that I just can't seem to figure out, so I thought I’d share it here to see if anyone has come across something similar or has any advice. I’d really appreciate any help or insights!

Networking Kit:
VM Home Hub 4 in Modem Mode.
Asus RT-AX92U is Primary connected to the VM Hub via Cat6 (provided by VM), from Port 1 on the hub to the WAN port on the router.
Asus RT-AX92U Secondary is connected to the primary router via a mesh network setup.

Networking Setup and Issue: I’m experiencing significant speed loss between my Virgin Media Hub and my router.

Here’s what I’ve tested so far: When I plug a wired connection directly into Port 1 on the VM Hub, I get speeds over 1 Gbps, so the external connection appears solid. When I run a speed test through the router, even using a wired connection, I only see about half that speed. Wi-Fi performance is also capped (as expected to some degree), but still lower than it should be.

What I’ve tried: Swapping Ethernet cables (Cat6). Changing ports on both the VM Hub and the router. Rebooting all devices.

Despite all of this, I consistently lose around 50 percent of my available speed between the VM Hub and the router.

Any ideas on what could be causing the bottleneck? This isn’t a new issue. It’s been happening for a while now, and I’m honestly just fed up with it.

    Are you using Asus firmware?

check your QoS settings try disable the auto stuff might slow your speed

my QoS settings are off as far as I can see and still no diff.

VM might be limiting the MAC of the Asus you say you can connect a PC to hub and get better speed how are you doing this do you need to reboot the hub? Make a note of your IP and MAC for the PC to hub in modem mode copy PC MAC to your Asus router WAN settings and connect it up.

  • You can't get speeds over 1Gbps when using 1Gbps ethernet ports. The maximum is around 940Mbps, so this is the most you'll experince across all devices at the same time when using your HUB 4 in modem mode.

QOS must be disabled on the Asus.

I get that I wont get over 1Gig but im only seeing half of that:

The above shows I'm only getting half, and these tests are done from the router to the modem.

All true, but that isn't the issue is it? From the OP's first post; "When I plug a wired connection directly into Port 1 on the VM Hub, I get speeds over 1 Gbps, so the external connection appears solid."

OK that's slightly suspicions no? As you rightly say, the Hub4 only has gigabit ethernet ports so speeds above around 960 Mb/s are simply impossible. Let's that go for now, but the OP claims that adding their own router in to the equation halves the speed.

So as you rightly say, we ned to look at what the Asus router is doing or possibly doing.

QoS isn't what many people think it is*, alas a number of router manufacturers add this 'feature', badly, and cause all sorts of issues. We need to consider what the Asus router might be doing.

*QoS - Quality of Service, it doesn't prioritise traffic from a particular machine, it doesn't do anything about restricting connection speed (cough, Legacy1, cough), it is concerned with prioritising certain 'classes' of information. VoIP traffic, for example, as long as said packets are properly tagged and the router, in fact no, not the router, the switch, can identify these and push them to the front of the queue! Do you think that the 5p VM hub can do this?

  • QOS is disabled. Yeah I know im not going to be 1Gig but I only get about 50%

These are from the router to the modem.*
