Fluctuating upload speeds!

So as title says, i have had the 1gig package around 2 months now and all was fine.

Over the last 2 weeks i have had very bad upload speed, its just seems to fluctuate, on a speed test it will go upto 105mbps but then start to drop like a brick.

Im on pc with an ethernet cable but it also does it on my xbox with cable and also my mobile phone via wifi so its not just the 1 device.

Have phoned Virgin they monitored the line for 24h and came back with no problem, its starting to annoy me now as i stream in 1440p so need the upload speed, download speed have been fine.

Have reset hub and all that and still the same!

  • Interesting that you have no DOCSIS 3.1 upstream channel, and instead have 6 upstream channels to compensate (Usually 5 3.0 are present plus one 3.1)

I wonder if your area is still to be upgraded and maybe there is some local congestion.

He may be in an RFoG area. There are some specific issues with OFDMA+RFoG, so VM only deploy SC-QAM here.

The figures and channel counts do look like RFoG ( same as us ).

The earlier speed tests showed very poor upstream bandwidth.

If the VM Hub is in Router mode, a speed test to the VM Hub might confirm this as a service issue.

Its in normal mode, managed to get an Virgin engineer out today so will see what he says, and sod law the upload seems a little more stable lol, will let you know what he says once been.

  • Ok so they came out, he could see it was fluctuating, they changed the cable to fibre from the street to the house, also changed the white thing thats on the wall in the house to a bigger one, cant remeber the what its called but says its a upgrade from the one outside.

Well the upload seems a little more stable but still fluctuating, he checked all upsteam and down stream and said it looked good, i did say if its still doing it when you leave could it be the hub its self, he said it could be. I have no clue what to do now, cant see virgin sending me a new hub to try lol.

Test hub in modem mode if that don't fix it likely nothing more that can be done unless more upstream get added in the area.

      Hello Rnash2002.

Thanks for your first post and welcome.

Sorry you have had packet loss and fluctuating upload speeds.

Also the engineers visit the other day seems to have improved the connection. although it's not as much as you would have hoped.

I did run a quick check on your hub and can see the up and download speeds are looking good.

I am happy to take a look at sending you a new hub out if you wish?

If you don't mind, I will need to send you a private message to pass security.
If you can check your logo at the  top right of your screen that would be great.
      Regards
