Trying to get connected.

Hi, I recently joined Virgin Media online, the online postcode check said it was possible. I booked an installation engineer as there was no box outside my house. (Virgin Media was used here previously).

The engineer turned up as arranged no problem but said he was only there to install the kit and couldn't fit a box outside. (There was no pre-installation visit).

I had to cancel Virgin as I was offered no options to have the box installed.

I have since located the cable, which has been cut in my garden about a metre from my house (picture attached) and still want the Virgin Media service.

Is it possible for an engineer to repair/extend this cable and install the omni box outside, and how do I go about getting this done as the online order form does not give any options?

Thanks for any advice.

Bryan

Fixing this will more than likely be a contractor job. Jointing relies on their being an amount of slack in the cable to fit a joint box. If the slack is not there then a new cable has to be pulled from the street cabinet, which can result in a whole new can of worms if ducting is overcrowded or otherwise obstructed. You could still be looking at weeks of delays getting connected.

Any ideas or pointers on how I can get them out to check what needs to be done?

It will certainly need a new cable.

Joining onto that cable stub is out of the question because the unsealed cut end will have let damp into the airspaced dielectric.

VM would probably want you to place an order and then wait while they call a contractor in to do the job.  It's not going to be a quick fix, so don't cancel your existing service until it's done.

I placed an order but they couldn't offer me a repair solution but still wanted to install the equipment as I was on a switch.

Thanks I'll try again but maybe order on the phone.

It's not clear from the photo but if enough of the cable can be exposed by removing that plank of wood and digging up the turf then it can be cut back to a clean section to enable a short cable to be connected. It's worth getting another tech to come round to examine this.

  • Good luck mate .. hold your breath ... hope you meet a decent contractor .. sometimes the work is outsourced to contractors .. sometimes its VM .. luck of the draw who turns up and how they see it
