Pre-order queries

I am thinking of switching to Virgin but would like to understand how connection would be made from where the fibre ends to my home office, and whether there would any additional installation costs for that. Two or three years ago, fibre was blown to every house on my road through BT's ducting ending in the grey BT box by my front door. But the router needs to installed in my home office, which is a cable/fibre run of just under 20m. How would this be achieved and would there be any additional cost?

Also, my home phone has already switched to VOIP. Would I be able to retain the number to avoid switching it again?

Virginmedia use their own cables, not the BT/Openreach ones.  The duct installed by OR is unlikely to accommodate the VM one.  VM will install their own cable from the road to wherever you need it to go, within reason.  It would be best if you were there when the cable is run to ensure it's in the right place.

And yes, you should be able to keep the same number.

  • I don't think VM use BT/Openreach full fibre infrasture so that grey box may be a complete red herring.

Is VM actually offering FULL FIBRE to you?

Is there a brown VM box on your wall?

If your phone is with BT VOIP, then it will not work with VM Hub's.  You will need to port the number to a VOIP supplier e.g. SipGate, Voipify etc.  Once this is done, you can move to any ISP without affecting your VOIP number.

However be careful if you do move your number with BT as this will most likely cease your contract.  You will need to time the move carefully.
