Poorly fitted cables hanging over my door and windows, cables have been attached w/o permission

I own the main door ground floor flat at removed  Edinburgh EH7 5HU(boundary marked on photo) and have major issues over the cabling for other apartments in the neighbouring blocks being attached to the facade of my flat and drooping dangerously over my doorway and windows.

The engineers have also caused damage to the stonework due to clumsy bracketing/ pinning of cables.  It is simply not acceptable that these cables are all over the front of my property at number 80, without any permission being provided, and it has caused me distress.  The cables should be attached to the facade of the building they serve or near a common stairwell not up the front of my main door flat.

Could you please advise how I should go about a complaint so that this can be rectified and all Virgin media cabling is removed from the front of the main door ground floor flat at 80 Brunswick Street Edinburgh EH7 5HU and that I receive compensation for the damage to the stonework or repairs to the areas where the cables have been incorrectly routed.

The area marked in red should have no cabling on the facade as it is a self contained flat with its own door and no permission has been given.  The flats above are served by the blue door adjacent.

I am considering also making a planning complaint as the area is a conservation area and the cabling will be in contravention of the planning rules.  However, in the first instance I am contacting you as it is not clear how to deal directly with Virgin Media as a non customer who has been impacted by cabling issues.

Many Thanks

I would hate to be walking out that door everyday with that lot hanging down.

expect nothing and you wont be disappointed - a staff member will pick this up in a few days and apologise - they may be able to open a complaint if you are a customer - if not it gets complicated - from there all they can do is nothing but pass it up the chain to be [likely] ignored which is VM usual plan - they hope you will get fed up and go away

so you will have to drive this if you want anything to happen

but 1st DO make the planning complaint - get the council or whoever involved - that might help - then think about what you want to happen and what you are prepared to do - by all means wait for VM here but give them a time frame - 7 days from contact or whatever and if nothing happens remove them if they are not a customer - wire cutters will do the job - you might want to warn whoever is fed by the cable

compensation - i would suggest thats not going to happen unless you want to take it legal - repair - a bit of silicone pushed into any holes is about all you will get

again imo your best plan is conservation complain - should VM not have permission for such things - not that that would be something they would bother to ask usually

  • Hello 4bsy.

Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention.

I will be honest and say this must be some of the worst cabling I've seen for a while.

I'd like to take ownership of this and fix the following.

    Cables to be routed correctly.

    Repair any damage caused.

Make sure feedback is passed over to the engineers responsible.

With this being a public page, I will need to send you a private message to take some contact details.

If you can check the envelope top right of your screen that would be great.
    Regards

  • Hello 4bsy

Thanks for your time over the past day.

I just wanted to keep updated, after escalating this to the service manager for your area we arranged for an engineer to attend to survey the cabling and damage.

We did find out the cables were not ours. so as not to waste a journey we then decided to tidy and secure them any way as a goodwill gesture.

Can you please let me know how the cabling looks and if you're happy with the outcome?

It's very good of the VM staff to tidy the cables, but they will presumably still be running across the OP's property.  It will be for the OP to decide whether to complain about the breach of planning regulations.
