New hub to install but instructions online don't match my set up

I have been sent a new Hub 5 to replace my old router. All that the box contained was the new router and a power supply. I have looked at the installation instructions online, and they seem straightforward but my current set-up has an extra cable going from an internet socket on the old hub into a Virgin Netgear box with three lights on in a nearby mains socket. There is also a similar box in a mains socket in my sitting room with an Ethernet cable going into my TV box.  I can't find any installation instructions that mention this, and I'm unsure how to proceed?

  • Unplug/screw the coax cable from existing HUB, and attach to new HUB.

Also transfer any ethernet cabling between HUBs.

Thanks for getting back to me, Do you know what the Netgear boxes are? are they some sort of signal booster and will they connect my TV automatically to the internet using the new hub?

Those “Netgear” plugs are the very old VM Powerline adapters.  They have been discontinued and no longer supported.  You should get a manned install and have those old units replaced by the newer VM Pods.

So, it won't work if I go ahead with the installation?

Except for using the new Power Supply all the existing cables come off the Hub 3 directly reconnecting onto the same sockets of the Hub 5 and it is job done.    Time < 5 mins.

Note the VM Engineer will absolutely not give you one or more VM Pods as replacements for any previously issued Powerline Extenders.

To get the VM Pods you will have to phone VM and attempt to order them one at a time. Unless you are on a Gig 1 tariff expect to be charged £8 per VM Pod per month. This makes the VM Pods very expensive to own when retail dual band Wi-Fi repeaters are available from £20 each.

I suspect the OP is already paying for those PLA’s, not withstanding the “thermal” issues they had on these Forums.

  • Hi Jooli23,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums. ⭐

We're sorry to hear there were no instructions included. If you have anything connected to the hub via ethernet cable, you would just need to remove these from the current hub, and plug them back in to the same ports on your new hub.

This will allow the additional equipment to connect seamlessly.

Let us know if you have any further queries or questions.

    Many thanks,
