third party email problem

Hi this has probably been covered but can't find anything on it. I had to provide a third party email address to access my VM account. This worked ok.

However, the third party email address was from a business account that is no longer valid and the email address is gone. Unfortunately, I didn't think to go into my VM account to change the third party email address before that address went down. Now, whenever I try and access my VM account it will only accept the now defunct third party address and claims to have sent a link to it for me to follow on to my VM account. Of course, I cannot access that link. I've spent a very frustrating phone call to VM this morning where the operator clearly had problems getting his head around the whole third party system and kept me hanging on for ages while he tried to work it out. Eventually, the line went dead.

Surely, with such a system, this problem must happen a lot. Why is it so difficult to sort? 

Can anyone help please?
