Extended my contract - charged £35 activation fee?!

I extended my 18 month contract with Virgin, and agreed a slight change in price, no problem.

But I just got charged an extra £35 for an activation fee when nothing new was activated?! And this was not mentioned to me at any point in the whatsapp conversation I had regarding my contract extension. 

I've been trying to get through on whatapp and on the phone to speak to someone but it's impossible.

      Hi Martin, we got sent another cable but we didn't need this and weren't told this would be sent. The wifi just continued to be used as normal. When I spoke to someone on Whatsapp they just said it would continue as normal - so I haven't done anything with the cable. If I knew I'd be charged with extending my contract I would've reconsidered.
