Ethernet Port 4 Showing Multiple Devices & Not Working (But Works on Vigor Switch) - Virgin Hub 5

Hey everyone,

I’m having a strange issue with my Virgin Hub 5 and was hoping someone might have come across this before or could shed some light.

Problem:

Ethernet Port 4 on the Hub 5 shows four different devices connected at the same time, which seems really odd. The connected devices list shows:

  • Multiple entries listed as “unknown” with different MAC/IP addresses
  • All of them showing as connected via Ethernet 4
  • Speeds are all showing as 1000 Mbps

However, despite showing this, nothing actually works on that port — the connection in my games room, which is run from that Ethernet line, gets no internet through the Hub 5 directly.

What I’ve Tried:

  • I plugged the same Ethernet line into my DrayTek Vigor switch, and everything in the games room works perfectly.
  • All devices in the games room (console, smart TV, PC, etc.) get full access when routed through the Vigor switch.

This tells me the wiring to the games room is fine and the devices are working — but for some reason, the Hub 5 isn’t handling multiple devices properly over that single Ethernet port, or it’s getting confused by the switch?

Best not to use the hub as a router the connected devices list has never worked right

The Hub 5 is reporting the speed of the first connected device for each network socket, so a Gigabit switch makes everything look like it is at 1000 to the Hub 5, even if it is a 10/100 printer or TV etc.

The 2.5 Gb/s port of a Hub 5 requires EEE ( Energy Efficient Ethernet ) to be Disabled in the connected device / switch etc.  Usually an unmanaged switch does not meet the disable EEE requirement and will work much better on the 1Gb/s ports of a Hub 5.

Hub is in modem mode, however that particular Ethernet works in the Vigor switch but not from the back of the router.

used to work perfectly fine up until last week, was getting 1gb in my games room now I’m only getting 80mb due to it being connected through the vigor switch.

The HUB can't be in modem mode as the image you posted shows you are connected on 192.168.0.1.

When in modem mode the HUB is accessible on 192.168.100.1.

legacy1 , yes I would always recommend a good branded switch with the Hub.

Client62 , yes agree, don't use the 2.5Gb port without EEE as well.

However a decent networking switch for the LAN side, will take a load off the Hub as a lot of the traffic with be managed by said switch.

Personally, I vote for modem mode as I've always done ...   ;-)
