Disney+ showing USA content

Here's a weird one.

So I've just tried to log into my Disney+ on my Roku and a pop up appeared saying 'Looks like you're travelling!' which I'm not as I'm sat in my living room at home. It is showing the USA Disney+ content and age ratings (PG-13, etc).

I checked on my mobile, when it's connected to the wifi it does the same but when I connect to data (iD Mobile) I get the UK version of Disney+.

BBC iPlayer loads as normal on the Roku.

I have restarted the hub and it still does the same as above.

Is this happening to anyone else or is it just me?

  • Probably it’s not just you, but rather will also affect a number of others, but not everyone.

It’s down to the IP address that VM have allocated to you, for some reason Disney believe that this is an address in the US and hence displays the appropriate content. On the other hand the BBC seem to know better which indicates that this isn’t a VM problem but rather a Disney problem as they are misinterpreting the data.

As proof "I checked on my mobile, when it's connected to the wifi it does the same but when I connect to data (iD Mobile) I get the UK version of Disney+.”. Yes, because on Wifi, your phone gets the same public IP address (which Disney believes is in the US), on mobile data it gets a different address which Disney is happy to acknowledge is in the UK and hence....

Probably it will sort itself out over the next few days. But as I said above, this is a Disney problem, not a VM issue. Either way, you may have ‘issues’ trying to get this fixed.

Your IP address is allocated by your ISP.

It's not the being on WiFi that makes the difference, but the underlying broadband connection. Whether the device in question connects to your VM hub by Ethernet cable or wireless is immaterial, but it's that hub which provides the onward internet connection, and thus a Virgin Media IP address.

If you're using mobile data, then the IP is allocated by your mobile provider.. in your case ID Mobile/3UK (depending on their core network config). Potentially if you were using an VM/O2 mobile, it's entirely possible your IP address could have the same issues as your VM home broadband seems to be.
