EMail password not working

This morning I had to change the password for my My Virgin Media account due to new password rules. I can now log in to My Virgin Media and web email but the email apps on my phone and PC are both failing to log in with this new password. I'm using imap.virginmedia.com and smtp.virginmedia.com.

Virgin support told me this morning that MVM and email passwords are separate so (1) why can't I log in via email apps and (2) why can I log in to web email ok with the new MVM password?

  • No I haven't, I've not had any issues with passwords until today. I'll give that a try, thanks.

  • So this means I need to change the MVM login email from my current ntlworld one?

When you generate the app password, you may be prompted to provide VM with a third-party email address (such as Gmail, Outlook etc. etc.). Along with the app password, this requirement is part of VM's recent 'security' changes.

When you have provided VM with the third-party email address and set the app password you ...

      1) Use the third-party email address and your VM password to access 'My Virgin Media' and VM webmail for your ntlworld mailbox.

      2) Use your ntlworld email address and the app password to set up an email app on a device.

In 1) above, your ntlworld email works as it did before but the third-party email address becomes your user name to login.

You need a different third-party email address for each VM mailbox. Each VM mailbox now has its own 'My Virgin Media' login to manage the mailbox (for password resets etc.)

      Hi al_the_bass

Welcome back to the Community Forums.

Sorry to hear of your email access and password concerns. I can see that goslow has already kindly advised on how to make these changes.

The login details will need to be an email that is not a Virgin Media email, such as Outlook or Gmail. Please let us know if you are having any further issues or have any questions at all. We'll be here to help on the Community Forums if needed.
