Contract ends and cancelling Direct Debit
Hi,
My VM broadband connection will be disconnected on 10th August. My last direct debit payment is termed the June bill but as VM charge a month in advance, the payment actually covers 15th July to 15th Aug. Here's text from that bill:
Bill date: 23 June 2025 |
Payment date: 15 July 2025 |
You've chosen to pay your bill by Direct Debit. We will request £73.66 from your bank or building society on or immediately after 15 July 2025. |
Now I've received a July bill which states:
Your bill |
CR £12.28 |
Bill date: 23 July 2025 |
Your bill this month is in credit. There is nothing you need to do. |
This credit bill with nothing to pay makes sense to me, as I've already paid 5 days beyond my disconnection date.
My question is, am I safe to cancel my VM direct debit now?
I note that on lots of other cancellation posts VM and forum members state that you shouldn't cancel the DD, as VM will process any refunds electronically if the DD is in place but will issue a cheque otherwise.
However this is not how the DD scheme works. The service provider cannot issue refunds via DD. I know this as I work in banking. Can anyone enlighten me as to why VM make this statement about keeping the DD open, to allow electronic refunds?
Finally, does the credit bill I've received constitute the "final bill" I hear about. I'm a little unsure as most forum posts talk about the final bill being issued after disconnection and I'm not quite at that point yet.
As I have a bill saying I'm in credit, can I take this as the final bill and be sure VM will not try to take payments they are not entitled to after disconnection?
Cheers.
