I have had my Virgin account for 18 years.
Now, of ALL times, when applying for a mortgage the system has 'wrongly" accused of me of defaulting. Moving my credit score down.
I have never ever owed any outstanding balance to Virgin and Virgin is to blame. I do not want to wait the 21 days to change this error. How can the system just do this.

There's no such thing as a credit score, that's a marketing term dreamed up by some credit reference agencies to sell you additional services.
What you have is a credit file which details your payment history with individual lenders. Have you identified a specific entry on that file which you believe to be incorrect?
If so, you should email details to mailto:creditfileamendments@virginmedia.co.uk together with supporting evidence.
Putting a default on someone's credit record is a serious matter, but VM seems to be careless about doing it without notice to the victim. It almost seems that VM's accounts department enjoy doing so.
Hopefully a VM person will pick this up here and offer to help, but they have very limited authority over these things.
Sometimes the returning of VM kit at the end of a contract can lead to complications like this.
