Was this a scam call?

I had a call on the landline this morning.  The caller said that he was from Virgin Media.  He said that problems with the speed of the broadband were being worked on.  He then asked how many devices that I was using.  He then asked me to check the speed on one of my devices.

I have never received a call from VM asking if I have any issues.  I ended the call because I didn't know where he was going with the call, and I suspected that it was leading to some kind of scam.

Does VM ever make calls like this?

You correctly identified this was a scam call. The scammer prentends to be from VM and tells you VM has identified a problem with your broadband connection.

The scammer then offers to fix the (imaginary) problem by remotely logging into your computer. Once the scammer has gained remote access to your device, the scam can take a variety of different paths with the aim of stealing money from you. Usually this involves gaining access to your online banking.

VM does not make tech support calls in this way out of the blue and you should never allow anyone remote access to your devices.

  • Hey SandraDJ, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry to hear this.

We wouldn't do these type of calls sorry, so it does look like a scam.

Do you have the phone number any chance?

  • Hi, sorry to hijack someone else's thread but I just had a very similar call from a woman with an Indian or Pakistani accent. Said she was from Virgin Media and asked how my services were working. I said they were fine and ended the call because I suspected it was a scammer. For the information of the VM team, the call was from the number 07455258982.

That number has been looked up 4 times already on the Who Called Me? website

If anyone rings you up, claiming to be from VM, to tell you they have 'dectected problems with your connection' or to advise there are 'hackers connected to your broadband' or any similar stories, those calls are always scammers. VM does not make proactive technical support calls like this. Just hang up without speaking to them.

Reporting numbers serves no real purpose in so far as the scammers either use a fake number or a number belonging to an innocent person/business who is unconnected to the scam. The scammers also change their fake numbers frequently.
