Virgin.net accounts

Are all the current emails doing the rounds about virgin.net accounts being closed genuine? Had the same one for 25 years but have been unable to send from it for about 5.

Had similar emails from talk talk about the account. Were virgin and talk talk ever connected?

thanks in advance

Yes, VM has emailed some email users advising them that their mailbox will be deleted, as per example

    https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Email-claiming-Virgin-Media-will-close-my-account/td-p/5573583

(not to be confused with a lot of generic scam emails stating that the receiving mailbox is being closed)

Those affected are people who do not currently have a VM broadband package. Many are users of virgin.net email addresses.

For those who have received the email yet do actually have a current VM broadband package, VM may be able to link the old mailbox to the current broadband account to continue use of the mailbox.

Are you a VM broadband customer with a virgin.net mailbox that you want to retain?

Interesting to go back in history.

TalkTalk bought Virgin's old ADSL (non fibre) internet service in 2015 and most of the affected Virgin ADSL customers did have virgin.net email accounts. However, Virgin did not sell off those associated virgin.net email accounts and Virgin Media still owns the virgin.net domain name.

TalkTalk don't and never have had any connection with Virgin.net email accounts.

If ex Virgin ADSL customers moved to a Virgin fibre broadband account they could keep their virgin.net email accounts. If they did not, or could not, move to a Virgin Media fibre account VM said that their virgin.net email accounts would be deleted  by the end of 2016. In actual fact they never got round to doing that,.

However, many of the virgin.net email accounts were  "dial up" email accounts created off CD's that anyone could buy in supermarkets. You did not have to be a Virgin Media broadband customer. You just had to dial into Virgin's dedicated number and check your emails once every 180 days to keep the email account open. Virgin closed their dial up service in 2013 so those dial accounts  should all have been closed years ago. Again, VM did not bother to delete them and many still exist today, but not for much longer!
