Unrequested equipment collection

Last week someone turned up at my door claiming to be from Virgin media and said he was here to collect my equipment. I told him that I had not requested this and he left. Does anyone have any idea why this may have happened? Could it have been a scam, or some kind of strange administrative error. He had my address. I can guarantee that I did not ask for this and received no email etc from Virgin about this beforehand.
