Phone call this am saying my wifi wasn't working properly. Turned on computer and pressed buttons they told me to. All sorts of errors and red letters all over. Wanted to take over my machine at which point told them they were scammers and switched off. I am an old girl, too old for shenanigans like this. Asian accents.
Indeed you were perfectly correct. This was a scam call.
They will inevitably phone you again (possibly using a different company name BT, Amazon etc.) and try a similar routine. When they do, just hang up on them without talking to them. Ideally when any call comes in, if it is not a number you know, just let the call go to answering machine and do not pick up.
