Parental controls stuck on

Hi,

For ~6 weeks now I have not been able to access some web sites due to parental controls being switched on (I also suspect virus protection is also switched on).

The parental controls were not switched on by me, I just noticed one day that I was unable to access some web sites along with the occasional warning message from virgin that the web sites were blocked.

If I view the parental controls setting I see they are switched off:

If I attempt to change these settings I get an error:

If I look further into the error - I see that the API being made by the screen is failing:

I have called customer support a couple of times about this and raised a complaint which has been a complete waste of time. The default position is there is no issue as they can see parental controls are switched off etc. I also see my complaint has now been marked as resolved.

The issue has been reported multiple times on this forum and its clear there is a bug in the back end system which manages these settings.

Virgin media's customer services representatives should be made aware of this issue and who they need to forward the issue to in order to have it resolved for their customers instead of wasting their time.

Can someone at Virgin get my issue looked at by the correct technical team and have it resolved ASAP as I have had enough of this now ?

Many thanks.

set your device to use another DNS like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

I should not have to do that and I don't want to do that....

I want VM to fix this issue for everyone that has it...

  • Personally I wouldn't want to use a DNS service from a provider who is having the issues you describe.

Even if the provider eventually manages to fix the issues you are descibing, I would assume other future issues would also be this difficult to solve for the said provider. Who knows how said DNS servers are maintained? There have been many DNS outages reported on these forums alone.

I have found third party DNS services to be far more reliable than ISP DNS services. Especially in this day and age.

ISPs running their own DNS servers is just a relic from when the internet was smaller and DNS servers were extremely expensive, pre-2007. Nowadays you can run your own, better DNS server on worthless hardware. In my opinion the only reason ISPs still run DNS servers is because it's nessasary to resolve google.com. If it wasn't nessasary it would have died along with NNTP, FTP, HTTP, SMTP, all of which VM previously provided to all subcribers.
