VOIP settings

We've just bought VOIP phones on the understanding (having spoken to Virgin support) that we could use them over VOIP via our Virgin router.

After some digging around here, it looks like this isn't possible. Could someone (ideally from Virgin) please confirm whether we can, or cannot use VOIP over our Virgin Hub 5 router?

Cheers

One can use VOIP phones via a VM Hub ( we have 3 VOIP numbers with Sipgate ), the catch is one needs a VOIP service provider to supply the SIP accounts + configuration details needed to set up the VOIP phones.

The VM domestic phone service supplied via the Hub is not VOIP for the customer, it is an analogue phone service delivered via an RJ11 to BT Socket adaptor that plugs into the Hub port TEL 1. ( see example photo below )

Customer services often give out incorrect information, although it’s true you can use a VoIP service with a VM broadband connection. The VM ‘update’ to use the hub instead of a separate wired connection is NOT VoIP, to use a VoIP phone with VM broadband you must purchase a subscription with a VoIP provider. VM may in the future offer a proper VoIP service, but not for quite some time, they have not announced any plans for one.

They need to be plugged into the Ethernet RJ45 sockets, not the Virgin Phone ports. You will also need to sign up with a VoIP provider. The Virgin phone ports are standard analogue phone ports & only connect to their legacy switched exchanges, not to the internet.

Unless you want VoIP, in which case you'll need a VoIP provider as advised, you can return the VoIP phones and simply connect your analogue handset to your hub with the adapter that VM provides. If you need multiple handsets then DECT works well with the base station connected to the hub.
