Replacing old vocom isolator

I am renovating the sitting room and the white coax box where the outside virgin media cable comes through the wall and connects into is old and so I have thrown it away. I’ve kept the inside which consisted of a vocom tv/fm isolator 5-1000 mhz vc300. I have now disconnected this and used a newer module I have found on Amazon (image attached). My internet works and tv works with the new module. I read somewhere that this isolator helps if there is an electricity surge? Do I still need this isolator or does the new module superseed this?

  • Technically you shouldn't be using your own hardware, even the cabling should be supplied by VM.

Is it not Virgin media hardware? it has the virgin media logo and said “genuine virgin media”

Not supplied and fitted by VM.

The isolator is required for old installs, however, I believe the newer cable, pictured, may contain an isloator in the cable (A 'bulge').

  • Just to let everyone know for the future. I’ve called Virgin media and confirmed the part I used is correct and fine to use. They said for future you should call up to get the part from them and they will put it on the next bill and either send it for you to install or have an engineer install it. I’ve specifically asked about installing it myself as people in a forum mentioned I could be breaching terms and conditions and was told it is fine.

Which is what I usually expect from VM call centres, that commonly ignore all the rules anyway just to get you off the phone. Most network noise issues are caused by DIY cabling & connections, which is why there is all the advice here against it. It can lead to customers ending up with big bills for the investigative work & disruption to other customers services caused by their alterations.

How do these end up on Amazon? New home builders can order them in bulk to wire up new estates & no doubt can make some money out of selling any surplus kit they have over rather than returning it to VM.

I'd caution buying electrical items online from unknown sellers as there's a lot of fake or unsafe stuff out there. A VM tech could have attended, replaced the socket and checked your cabling and signals for £25.

  • Why wait for VM, genuine part not rocket science to fit ?
