It is also useful for devices that need to use 2.4, as they cannot connect to a dual 2.4/5.0 stream, like my WiFi cameras. If you have WiFi issues it is best to run a Cat6 cable from your fastest port on your hub, to a central location, (stairs on a large property) and mount a router as a WiFi access point. Most modern Routers will self configure like this. Re: Wi-Fi hopeless!! I was advised many years ago when I had a Hub2, to get my own router and set it up as a WiFi access point. When I moved into my current home a Bungalow, I ran cat5e cable via the Electrical ducting to all rooms. I could then have a WiFi access point whereever I wanted. Initially I used a 2nd hand Netgear Nighthawk R8000 for my WiFi. 2 Years ago I switched to a Tenda WiFi 6 Router. By using these I have never had a problem with WiFi. Re: Yale Smart Alarm not working After being given advice by a network nerd, for the last 15 years I have been using my own Cheapish routers plugged into the VM hub by cat5e cable. So whenever the hub gets changed my inner network remains constant. Originally I had been using 2 cheap routers. one near to the hub and a second on the end of a 20 meter cable run, ( I ran 6x cat5e cables from the hub to my bedroom / PC room, so I have redundancy, again advice from a tech installing a new network system). On the advice of a network nerd I changed to a Gigabit switch for distribution. After the debacle with the firmware for Hub 5 and EEE in March 2024, I changed to a Managed 2.5 Gig switch (EEE off by default), hence I get 1100 to 1160 down on the GIG plan. I had been using Netgear Nighthawk routers R8000 & R7800 until a year ago. I now have a Nighthawk RAX 120 12 Stream Gaming Router & a WiFi 6 Tenda on the cable run for my CCTV cameras on 2.4 GHz. The point I am making is dont rely or expect VM to supply equipment to forfill your requirement. Maybe look at getting somethiong a bit more robust that meets your requirement. Re: Practically 0Mbps upload speeds Sounds like the engineers need to check the cable for breaks, had this at the junction box, literally 10mm from where it is clamped. He stripped it back about 5cm. It cured a load of problems. During hot weathe it expanded and contracted. Re: Possible Hub 5 issue I would advise checking your cable connections to make sure you have a good connection. The center core put a 10° bend in it, so it touches the side when clamped. If the speed does not increase to 960 via cable to a 1 gig port, then you may need the externals checking. There could be a fault with the connection at the underground juction box or the green box. Have seen several faults over the last 18 years, resulting in a Road rewire a few years ago. Having put Cat 5e cable round my property about 15 years ago. I have a WiFi 6 Router setup as a WiFi access point at the furthest point from my Hub, It is by an upsatirs window, so provides WiFi to my back garden. Was advised how to do this by a network geek, at the time of installing the cables. This operates separately to the Virgin Hub, ie different network name. So if the Hub is changed this remains the same. Re: Possible Hub 5 issue Actually it will measure the speed to the Hub & Device, if the device is connected by cable to the hub. NB I use a 16 port managed switch connected to the 2.5gbit port on the hub, to negate the firmware turning on Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE). This has been an ongoing problem for over a year, waiting for updated Hub firmware. Re: Are Hub 3s being retired? Would rather have a Hub3 than Hub4. When an engineer visited, he took one look at my HUB 4 and stated I am replacing that. He had a Hub 5 in his toolbox. So now have Hub 5 with WiFi 6. What you get will depend on the speed you have. Re: Faster Upload speed If your on 1130 you are like on Co-ax, you need to be on the 2 Gig Fiber to the home to get the faster upload. Re: Hub 5 - Ethernet Ports failed feed cable was slightly loose, and the Tivo ethernet cable was replaced. All now functioning correctly. Re: Hub 5 - Ethernet Ports failed After a factory reset of the hub, the 40 odd dropouts a day have stopped. Port 1 started showing signs of life this morning, with ports 2, 3 & 4 working about 30 mins later. Currently all 4 ports are working correctly. Only problem my network printer is refusing to play.
