Is my V6 failing?

darren-w-gray
On our wavelength

I am trying to fault-find my TV box rather than talk to Tier 1 support on the phone. I have an Arris V6 TiVo box and there are a few anomalies that are starting to make me think it will need a replacement soon.

So over the last few weeks, our Samsung Smart TV has stopped recognising the Box as a VM Box, but just as a TiVo. It means that we can not use the TV remote to control the V6. Once or twice, removing the HDMI and power cycling the TV resolved it, but that is not appearing to work anymore, even with a swapped out HDMI cable.

The family now tell me that when they have not been able to bring the box out of standby like they usually do. It hangs for a few minutes and after repeated jabs of the home button it goes through a full reboot which takes much longer than it used to. I have done a "proper" power cycle of the box this morning to see if it improves things.

Lastly the power light (before the power cycle - not re-checked it yet) is showing as a purple-ish colour.

I know that means something with the Hub 3 router, does nothing on the VM help pages for the TV box?

Any ideas? If it's just a new box needed then I know I will probably need to get an engineer out.

Hi @darren-w-gray

Your actual TV, the Samsung UA7100 will have received an operating system upgrade possibly over the air around 22nd October ( ver 2220.9 - 1347.51 MB) which may be why it is now recognising the V6 as a tivo box and not working with it  -  see the following page which also includes a link to the update

The same thing happens with my LG TV's and current TV360 box following LG updates - the LG smart remotes stop working with my 360 and I have to set them up again. Since my migration from the V6 to TV360 platform my LG sometimes recognises the box as VM North East, sometimes it's Ziggo, and sometimes it Ziggo Mediabox Next.

Before the migration to a 360, my V6 was recognised as VM North East, Virgin DCX960 and Arris DCX960.

There's no guarantee the following will work but might eb worth a try as in the past Samsung smart TV remotes have been able to successfully pair using either Arris DCX960, or just DCX960, and also Pace DCR7111 (the Pace one seems to go through phases where sometimes it isn't recognised and then starts working again)

Both my V6s have done a series of reboots recently, making me think there have been some firmware tweaks. This may have caused the issues with the remote, but unless others report it here we will never know. How full is the HDD in the box? as this can cause issues. Signal problems can also cause the box to reboot. The full spectrum LEDs do struggle with age. Usually the blue driver goes first, turning a cool white LED to warm white & then eventually red when the green also fails. It looks like the green is failing first in yours, leading to the purple hue.

Forum Staff should pick up on this thread in a couple of days & provide assistance if required.

PS. A word of warning. Phone CS staff seem to be incentivised to push a V360 migration at anyone having problems with TiVO. Any migration is still voluntary & replacement V6 TiVOs are still available, so don’t be persuaded if you like the way TiVO operates. V360 Horizon is a totally different TV platform & is not in any way related to TiVO.

I have taken a look at the box and indeed it was flooded with recordings that the children have decided we need. So I have cleared down about 50% of the HDD capacity!

I also ran the VM self-test, which "can't connect to the TV kit in your home" - albeit it network connection appears to be working this end.

Hopefully I am just being paranoid LOL.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply, as I had not considered that it could have been a TV update causing the remote control issue.

Turns out that although I had reset the VM Box as the input source, I had to delete the profile for the TiVo from the Universal Remote on the TV as well.

I would not have though that would be the way that Samsung would have designed things!

Either way, everything seems to have settled down now.
