Welcome Screen then nothing

Woke up this morning to a box that wouldn't switch on.  Performed a reset and it gives me the welcome screen, then just a 640x480 grey square in the middle of the screen.  No picture, no sound, no GUI.

Anyone else had this before?

Did all the usual - complete shutdown and cold boot, checked all the cables etc.

Tech support were (as always) about as useful as a chocolate teapot

Sounds like a failed box - you should get the welcome screen, followed by (usually) 3 rounds of "Starting up" as the video-test checks each output resolution.

As a last throw of the dice, you can try the following sequence which is often a way of recovering "borked" software. I suspect yours is failing before this, but if you're looking at a box replacement anyway, you've not got much to lose by trying..

Try turning off the 360 at switch; then on the box hold down both the power button and the +button at the same time. Then turn on the 360 again whilst keeping hold of those buttons for a further 30 seconds. The box should reboot, the power button should turn blue, and it should reset and boot up normally.
