Thank you everyone for replying and thank you all for the advice. I am on a sunny holiday now but sadly returning today. I will be logging this with support once I am settled and up for the battle 😉
A nice young virgin media technician called Ethan visited and sorted my issues. He saw the only two upstream channels and set about fixing it. He replaced the wall box that was hanging off and replaced the cable end connectors as rusty. He replaced the cable splitter indoors with modern white one. I now have five upstream channels. Thank you everyone for giving me the right words to convince VM support to book me a technician visit! Thank you.
