i looked up the number but got conflicting answers, some saying it was associated with Virgin and others that it was a scam.

Hi, it’s Virgin Media.

We’ve noticed your WiFi connection could be stronger, so we’d be happy to send you a WiFi Pod at no extra cost to boost your signal. Just reply YES by 19 September and you’ll have it within five working days. Sorted!

Hello Madhouse4,

Welcome back to the community and thanks for taking the time to post. I’m sorry to hear that you've got a text that may not be legitimately from Virgin Media. I'm looking into this now and will get back to you as soon as I can with an update.

Kind Regards,

I've never known VM be quite so obliging with its precious pods. Getting one usually involves jumping through more hoops than Crufts. Just saying.

Be grateful to know if it's real or not, I just got this text this morning...

Thanks

lol, good point. It does sound too good to be true. The thing is we do have issues with WiFi strength so a booster would be really handy.

Thank you. Until I hear otherwise I’ll assume it’s a phishing scam

If it’s a genuine offer I would take it as our WiFi signal can be dire at times.

I've only got 6 days left!

On our wavelength

The thing is, suppose I randomly called a number of people and said exactly the same? Just about everyone will think to themselves, ‘well I have had some WiFi / internet slowdown in the past month or so’, it sounds realistic! The truth is that EVERYONE has some issue with their WiFi or connectivity at some point - it’s simply the way it works. Nobody, if asked ever, ever says, ‘well my connection has been absolutely 100% perfect’.

And then, there’s the question of, suppose it was genuine, how would VM know how your WiFi was performing, well unless they were secretly monitoring and snooping on all the internet connections you were making?

Now it might well be a particularly badly handled, but legitimate VM marketing campaign to shift a few more pods, but more likely it’s a third party scam. You reply with ‘YES’, the recipients know that they have a ‘mark’, and follow up with something along the lines of; ‘Congratulations, we can send you a pod, there is a small charge of £5 for this, if you could reply with your bank details then......'

Cynic, moi? Absolutely not!
