Have had virgin broadband since just before Christmas. Need to be able to control access to router (to boot the kids at bedtime etc) can't do so as VM connect app can't (and has never been able to) find our Hub4.
App on android phone - tried 3 different ones. Have reset router using pen in hole multiple times, deleted and redownloaded app... nothing works.
Any clues before I throw the towel in and through the router out...

Make sure your phone is on the same Wifi SSID and Wifi band as the Hub, e.g. the 5Ghz band. Also make sure you are not using any VPN or Proxy settings on the phone. Both the phone and Hub need to be able to communicate over the exact same Wifi signal.
